New Year Celebration

The Celebration of the Year of the Pig traditionally took place from Sunday 14th to Tuesday 16th of April, as it happened in Cambodia.

However, at Wat Buddharangsi the celebration began on Friday 12th, and continued on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th April 2019.

Usually at Wat Buddharangsi Melbourne, the celebration involves the three days of Buddhist ceremony, on the weekend closest to the actual New Year days. Games, dances and live performance are the activities observed on the New Year Celebration days, which also include delicious delicacy to complete the tradition of the celebration in Melbourne.

As the actual day was until Tuesday the 16th, Wat Buddharangsi Melbourne also held the Buddhist ceremony for the community members who can attend on Tuesday 16th of April.

Vesak Day

After the New Year celebration, we commemorate the Vesak Day, usually taking place in May. It signifies three very important events of the Buddha: The Birth, Enlightenment and Nibbana or Nirvana, the passing away of Buddha Gotama. This year, Wat Buddharangsi celebrated Vesak Day (Visak Bochea) on the 18th of May. Khmer community members participated in a small procession within the Wat’s compound, with the traditional commemoration.

Prior to this date, Wat Buddharangsi members also participated in Victorian Unite Nations Day of Vesak on the 4th of May. It involved a procession of the images of Buddha across the City of Melbourne, with different Buddhist communities.  The procession entered Melbourne Town Hall where the main celebration took place, with artistic contributions from different communities.
